Argentina officially announced it would not join any intergovernmental organization BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

This decision answers the campaign promise of Argentine President Javier Milei, who was inaugurated in December 2023.

Reported Al JazeeraArgentina’s decision was written in a letter signed on December 22 and only released on Friday (29/12).

Javier Milei told the five BRICS members that now is not the right time for Argentina to join the new economic bloc.

“[Pendekatan saat ini] differs in many aspects from the previous administration’s approach,” wrote Javier Milei’s letter to BRICS members.

“In this case, the decision agreed upon by the previous government will be reviewed,” the statement continued.

However, in his letter to the BRICS leaders, Milei said that Argentina was still trying to build bilateral relations more intensively.

Argentina is also said to be committed to increasing trade and investment flows, even though it has canceled joining the group.

This decision is part of a series of radical economic reforms carried out by Milei since becoming president. Milei, who is a right-wing liberal, from the start stated his plans to change the previous government’s approach to relations with developing countries.

Milei then emphasized that the foreign policy that would be launched during his leadership period would tend to be in line with Western countries.

BRICS is an acronym for five countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The five created a new economic bloc with the aim of promoting dialogue and cooperation between developing countries.

Recently, China and Russia have also increasingly pushed for the expansion of the BRICS group to counter Western economic domination.

For example, when Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates were also invited to the summit last August to join BRICS.
