Argentina asks Qatar to arrest a senior Iranian official accused of attacking a Jewish center

The Argentine Ministry of Justice has asked Qatar to arrest a senior Iranian official suspected of participating in the 1994 attack on a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, which resulted in the death of 85 people.

Federal judge Daniel Ravicas called on Monday evening for the arrest of the Iranian president’s assistant for economic affairs, Dr. Mohsen Rezaei, who is currently in Qatar, so that he can be tried in Argentina.

Argentina does not have an extradition treaty with Qatar.

Investigations into the 1994 attack, when a truck loaded with explosives exploded outside the Argentina-Israel Joint Association building, made little progress.

Argentine courts have blamed the attack on Iran. But no one was tried in that case or in the attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992. Iran denies any role in the attacks.

“The accusation brought against him derives from the evidence of his participation in the meeting where it was decided to carry out the attack on the association’s headquarters,” Ravikas said in an official letter asking for his detention.
