A strong earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale occurred shortly after midnight (Greece time) in the region of San Luis, Argentina, according to the measurements of the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
The focal depth was located at 129 kilometers below the earth’s surface, according to the EMSC. San Luis is relatively close to the capital of Chile, Santiago.
Preliminary data from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) show differences from the EMSC. It is reported that the earthquake was located at an intermediate to significant depth of 172.3 kilometers. The magnitude of the earthquake may have been moderated by its relatively large depth below the surface, which makes it appear weaker in absolute numbers.
The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake may be revised within the next hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused significant damage, but it was likely felt by many people as a slight tremor in the epicenter area.
