On Tuesday night, unknown persons tried to carry out a ‘digital explosion’ on an Argenta ATM in Dessel. The bank is now temporarily closing 62 machines that are sensitive to jackpotting or manipulation of the software.

Criminals attempted jackpotting on Wednesday morning around 3.30 am on the cash machine in the Argenta office on the Molsebaan in Dessel. It is a so-called ‘digital thief’, in which the thieves try to hack and manipulate the computer system behind the ATM. The aim is to influence the machine via the software in such a way that it starts spitting out money bills en masse.
The intruders damaged the cash machine during that raid, the security officer determined, who had rushed after the computer system had sent out an alarm. They cut a hole above the terminal, presumably to get to the computer system. According to the Balen-Dessel-Mol police zone, it was an attempt and the jackpotters were unable to take any money. The police is investigating the case.
Not first time
It is not the first time that an Argenta office has been the target of this form of virtual thieves. A similar attempt took place last weekend in an office in Sint-Niklaas. “It concerns the same type of ATM there as in Dessel,” says Argenta spokeswoman Mieke Winne. “Due to the quick intervention of the security firm, there was no loot at the time.”
“Argenta is closing 62 ATMs of this type for cash transactions today pending further security measures. Argenta has a total of 348 ATMs in Belgium,” it sounds. There were also jackpotting attempts in the Argenta offices in Borsbeek and Ranst last year. At that time, more than a hundred ATMs were temporarily closed. At that time, it was a different type of machine than with the current intervention.
