Arequipa: Promote Improved Access to Care for Cancer Patients | News

With the aim of improving access to care for cancer patients in Arequipa, representatives of public and private entities in the locality signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) promoted by City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), an international association that supports the implementation of collective solutions against this disease.


The Memorandum establishes the c/can commitment from supporting Arequipa to leading the improve the health of its population, reduce inequalities in access to quality cancer care, through a network of multisectoral partners such as government and non-governmental agencies, private sector associations, patient groups, hospitals, clinics and academia.- The document provides a framework for cooperation between the regional government of Arequipa, the provincial municipality of Arequipa, regional health management, Regional Institute of Neoplastic Diseases IREN Onthe South Branch of the Peruvian Society of Medical Oncology and C/Can for the participation of the city of Arequipa in the City Cancer Challenge initiative. –

According to Cancer Registry in Arequipa, between 2008 and 2014the main types of cancer observed in the city were breast, prostate, cervical, stomach and lung cancer.

Meanwhile, in 2020, IREN Sur treated nearly 4,000 detected cases of cancer, an important figure considering the emergency situation that the country was going through due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The National Association of Pharmaceutical Laboratories (Alafarpe) participates in this initiative, a non-profit institution that brings together 22 national and foreign laboratories, which promote access to quality, safe and effective medicines in a timely manner, focused on innovation for benefit of Peruvian patients.
