Arequipa: COVID-19 kills 17 doctors in Arequipa

Treating dozens of coronavirus carriers daily in hospitals cost the lives of 17 doctors from Arequipa. The professional victims of the Wuhan disease are part of the 77 thousand 804 people carrying COVID-19 who have registered since March 7 in the region.

Unfortunately, a large number of the deceased were members of the medical staff of hospitals such as Honorio Delgado Espinoza, Carlos Alberto Seguín Escobedo and other health centers in the periphery.

A GREAT FIGHTER. On the list of fatalities, there is the former regional Health Manager and doctor of the COVID-19 Hospital, Wilfredo Pino Chávez, who perished yesterday morning in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the EsSalud Hospital Carlos Alberto Seguín Escobedo.

The news not only moved the medical union and other colleagues who knew him, but also his undergraduate and graduate students at the Catholic University of Santa María, where he taught even before he fell ill.

It was his son Renato Pino Cabello who confirmed the unfortunate news through social networks. In the message where he adds a video, he regrets his departure and talks about what the doctor and father Wilfredo was like.

“Our irrepressible pain and our enormous regret, I just ask you one last prayer for the rest of your soul, I leave you a video from a few years ago, of how at least I will always remember him, a lucid, courageous, and impetuous guy like el Misti ”, says the text.

Pino, despite being interned in a hospital bed, always made known the irregularities that were committed in the Health sector.

For example, in one of his last post on social networks, on July 15, where he questions the work of the authorities of the Regional Government of Arequipa and holds them responsible for how they are handling the issue of the pandemic.

“Complaints at once, why do we, Arequipa, put up with so much? Thus, how will the health personnel attend? We knew that there was cultural vulnerability, but the worst of all is the political vulnerability or the best politicking in the region, total incapacity. While I can, have the strength and if God decides, I will continue from a sick bed of COVID claiming for the public health of my Arequipa, “he wrote.

They regret departure. The dean of the Medical College, Javier Gutiérrez Morales, was one of the first to pronounce on Pino’s death and indicated that it is an irreparable loss, not only for the medical community but also for Arequipa.

“Dr. Pino was a highly trained professional in surgery and in management in all matters of health. A person with impeccable merits ”, he expressed.

Gutiérrez was also concerned because the highest number of deaths have been reported in recent weeks, where more patients were admitted to medical centers. According to the latest data, there are around 232 professionals infected.
