Arecibo radio telescope. Scientists have provided dramatic information

Scientists say this is the end of an era in the history of astronomy. The end of the iconic design and radio telescope that served science and discovery for 57 years. The telescope structure of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico has collapsed. The huge 900-ton radio telescope platform suspended above the canopy sprang up and fell from a height of 137 meters. Nobody was hurt in the crash. Scientists knew about the problems, assuming the self-collapse of the already unstable structure. In August 2020, the first two ropes supporting the platform broke. Then the observatory was closed for security reasons. The Arecibo radio telescope was involved in many important discoveries, including the existence of neutron stars. Over the course of 57 years, it was possible to discover the first three extrasolar plans. Until 2016, it was the largest single dish radio in the world (305 meters in diameter). Due to its size, the structure was recognizable all over the world. There were, among others in films about …
