The Coyhaique Regional Hospital has been part of the National Organ and Tissue Procurement and Transplantation Coordination network for 5 years, but no effective donation has yet been made from Aysén.
Coyhaique.- In Chile today, 2,395 people are waiting for families to have a crucial conversation, which could have a positive impact on their lives or even make the difference between life and death. Today, 2,395 boys, girls, young people, adults and older adults make up the waiting list for organ transplants in our country.
Despite the fact that since 2010, with the promulgation of Law 20,413, all Chileans over 18 years of age are considered donors, few are aware of this regulation, as we confirmed when talking with neighbors of Coyhaique.
“I really have never thought about it or talked to my family. I did not know that by law we are all donors, I imagined that one had to sign an authorization, I think it is important that we discuss these issues, even more so one who has a family, has children who might need it,” said Camila Vásquez.
Chilean law specifies that one only ceases to be a donor if they register before a notary their will not to give up their organs, but despite this, close relatives are always consulted if they are willing to donate the organs and/or tissues of their loved ones. .
“I think it is necessary that we talk, because today we do not talk about these things. They talk about what is happening in the country, but they don’t talk more about Health or how to help others or put themselves in someone else’s place,” added Viviana Navarro.
In the Aysén region, the Coyhaique Regional Hospital is the only one with the necessary medical capacity and equipment to form part of the National Coordination Network for Procurement and Transplantation of Organs and Tissues (CNPT) of the Ministry of Health.
The program has been operating in the main health center in Aysén for 5 years, however to date no effective organ donation has been made from our region.
Today there are many people who could improve their quality of life, my closest experience is with dialysis patients, the only option for these patients is to have a transplant because dialysis is a treatment that only allows them to stay alive, nothing more, it is the only opportunity they have” explained the EU Angélica Cerda Gallardo, Local Organ Procurement Coordinator of the HRC.
As we explained earlier, to carry out organ donation, the consent of the family is required and it is for this reason that it is crucial that households in the Aysén region start talking about this issue.
“In no case is the donation made without the consent of a third party. We are going to have to speak with the family, but because of the times, this is sometimes done at the worst moment, it is the moment in which they found out that their relative has passed away, so I wish this could have been previously discussed, this It is the most important thing for us to advance at the national level, that this conversation be held beforehand in the family,” added the Local Organ Procurement Coordinator of the Coyhaique Regional Hospital, USA, Angélica Cerda Gallardo.
A single organ donor can save 8 people and have a positive and direct impact on the lives of their families, which is why the Coyhaique Regional Hospital invited the community to learn and talk about these types of issues.
