According to the Part Time Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist at Hermina Jatinegara Hospital, dr. Adila Rossa Amanda Malik, Sp.OG, having sex in the third trimester can indeed induce labour. This is because the sperm touches the cervix.
“In theory, sperm that enters during sexual intercourse can induce contractions or signs of labor. When sperm hits the cervix, inflammatory substances called prostaglandins will be called and can induce labor,” Adila told Hai Bundasome time ago.
Adila said that prostaglandins are already present in the final trimester of pregnancy. This is because the placenta is old enough and the position of the fetus is ready to come out.
Labor contractions and sex during pregnancy
Even though it can induce labor, having sex at the end of pregnancy cannot be a determining factor in giving birth. Mothers need to be vigilant with premature rupture of membranes when contractions occur.
“Delivery is not only about contractions, but it can be from premature rupture of membranes. The condition of premature rupture of membranes is indeed associated with labor contractions, which can be triggered by high prostaglandins or patients who are in the high-risk group,” said Adila.
“So, before having sex during pregnancy, you should first consult a doctor. Don’t let the delivery process also become a high risk.”
During pregnancy, Mother can have sex regularly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), what is meant by regular is having sex 1 to 3 times a week.
But, if you are worried about affecting the fetus, you can first consult with your doctor about having sex during pregnancy. Mothers may need to avoid some sex positions because they are afraid that they can affect the condition of pregnancy.
