are the French really ready to turn the heat down to 19 degrees?

The government has urged homes not to exceed that temperature this winter due to gas shortages. A study shows that the French are very divided on this issue.

The roadmap is outlined but are the French ready to join it? As Russia cuts gas valves, electricity has never been so expensive, the government has urged homes not to exceed 19 degrees this winter for their heating. One degree less saves 7 to 8% on the bill, the executive insists.

But according to a survey * conducted for Rothelec, the acceptance of fireplaces is not total.

First, they believe they don’t have to be on the front line. Therefore, more than 54% think that individuals should put in less effort than professionals. Only 39% believe that efforts should be equivalent and 4% believe that it is up to individuals to save more.

Regarding the drop in temperatures, the French are very divided as 48% think this is a good idea but 39% think not and 13% do not yet know how to answer this question.

Only a third of the French are ready to drop below 20 °

Specifically, 45% of respondents say that this winter they will reduce the heating of their homes by a few degrees, but 44% admit that they will not and 11% have not yet decided.

In any case, only a third of French people (33%) will set the comfort temperature of their living room this winter between 18 and 20 ° C. For 31% it will be between 20 and 22 ° and also between 22 and 24 ° for 29%.

“It therefore appears that the recommendations for lowering temperatures between 18 ° C and 19 ° C are not fully respected in practice,” it reads. The reasons may be many but the persistence in France of many poorly insulated houses, the famous thermal sieves, pushes the French to push the heating.

In any case, 51% of those interviewed in September plan to change or improve their heating system compared to 47% last May. Naturally, gas is no longer in the spotlight as this choice has gone from 33 to 24% in just a few months. Conversely, wood takes 10 points at 19%.

Methodology: Survey conducted on 1002 representative people of the French national population aged 18 and over. Survey conducted online by the BuzzPress interview panel (27,000 people in France). Between August 31, 2022 and August 7 September 2022.
