Are the Bulgarian youth becoming militarized and why? –

/ world today news/ Ordinance on the terms and conditions for organizing, conducting and ensuring the training of Bulgarian citizens for the defense of the fatherland was adopted by the government of Galab Donev. Bulgarian students in the 10th and 11th grades will now necessarily have a total of 10 hours of “military training”.

The general program includes knowledge and skills related to homeland defense, civil-military relations exercises, providing assistance to the population during military crises, detecting and surviving unexploded ordnance, providing assistance from the armed forces to law enforcement agencies. security, terrorism and illegal arms trafficking, as well as the protection of the population and critical infrastructure, as well as the participation of the armed forces in rescue and evacuation activities. The program for students will end with the history and present of the Armed Forces of Bulgaria, the missions of our army inside and outside the country, the essence and goals, equipment and acceptance of military service and reserve service in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria.

If there is logic in the education about the duty of every Bulgarian to the fatherland, one does not need to be an expert in national security and military affairs to understand that 10 hours on the above-mentioned topics is extremely insufficient, that even frivolous, to convey whatever and quality education for the Bulgarian youth. There is a suspicion that the aforementioned regulation of the Council of Ministers is an attempt to warm Bulgarian society in the context of the international crises and the events in Ukraine. For example, special attention has been paid to the procedure by which high school principals must submit the number of classes and weekly timetables to the military districts. The terms for the selection and training of the military personnel who will lead the classes are also described separately. It is noteworthy that the previous military training in the country was the 9th and 10th grades, according to the new regulation, it is withdrawn one year ahead (10th and 11th grades), that is, shortly before the Bulgarian children come of age.

The same regulation also regulates the application and training procedure for Bulgarian citizens meeting the conditions for acquiring a qualification “Reserve officer”. Thus, financial incentives are provided for students, such as covering a part of their fees in Bulgarian higher education institutions (up to 25%), if a student decides to become a reservist. In such a case, the military training is 1000 hours or two semesters within two academic years. Once enrolled, the student is required to complete his military training. Otherwise, he is obliged to return all funds for training, mentoring and food. Upon successful completion, the student is sworn in and assigned the rank of reserve officer.

From the regulation on “conducting and ensuring the training of Bulgarian citizens for the defense of the fatherland” is being tacitly passed into encouraging conscription. Children almost 18 years of age are taught a seemingly patriotic, purely theoretical training, with the aim of inducting an entire generation into the art of warfare. There is no way in 10 hours over 2 years to train students who have never held a model rifle in their hands, how to react adequately against ammunition, military contingents and various crisis situations, including war. However, these 10 hours can, with the participation of specially trained experts, light the flame in the minds of an entire generation for a love of war, such as did not even encompass German society after the loss of the First World War.

The question comes to the fore, why, after conscription in the army was abolished on December 31, 2007, and for 15 years we were told that we must have a professional and modern army, at this very moment, the militarization of the Bulgarian youth is once again underway ? Why, after our military has been completely destroyed, the SS23 missiles scrapped, some of the tanks gifted to North Macedonia, and our aviation grounded to levels where we have to have foreign troops patrol our airspace, are we starting to think again How can we persuade Bulgarians to join the army? Do we have the necessary equipment and potential to re-create an army capable of defending the territory of our country, or do we still need to allocate resources in this direction after 15 years of coercion? And finally, will this army be used to defend our territory or will it be sent to become cannon fodder in other countries in defense of foreign interests?
