are environmental victories still possible in Lyon?

In the next legislative elections in June 2022, environmentalists will try to obtain seats of deputies in Lyon and in the Rhône.

Despite the position in the polls of their presidential candidate Yannick Jadot, they are pinning some hopes on certain constituencies in Lyon. They had obtained good results there in the municipal and metropolitan elections of 2020.

Outgoing ecologists in the 2nd constituency thanks to the change of coats

On the left, environmentalists are pinning some hopes for these 2022 legislative elections. On the strength of their victories in the municipal elections in Lyon and metropolitan, certain constituencies in the heart of Lyon could be favorable to them, sociologically at least.

Thanks to the change of coats, the ecologists even find themselves in the position of “outgoing” in the 2nd constituency. Hubert Julien-Laferriere, a former socialist party to LREM, left the majority during his term of office (but not his seat) to join Génération Écologie, a partner of EELV. The Green Party should normally support him in June 2022, even if his case creates a stir and disagreements within local militant groups.

His changes of orientation have indeed exacerbated tensions, but his position as an outgoing remains attractive for the party, which suddenly finds itself possibly very well placed on this circo.

Legislative 2022, which is presented in the metropolis of Lyon and in the Rhône?

This article comes from a broader point on the candidacies in the 14 constituencies of the Rhône and the metropolis of Lyon. A panorama which is updated regularly according to the announcements of candidacies or withdrawals in the event of partisan agreements.

The 3rd constituency of the Rhône, the best chance for environmentalists in the legislative elections?

Quite logically, ecologists are pinning some hopes on the 1st and 3rd districts of the Rhône as well as on the 6th district, that of Villeurbanne. Sophia Popoffmunicipal councilor of Lyon, will be the EELV candidate in the 1st constituency, notably facing outgoing deputy Thomas Rudigoz (LREM).

Marie-Charlotte Garin, chief of staff to the mayor of the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, will be a candidate in the 3rd district. This 3rd constituency is, on paper, one of the constituencies representing the most hope for ecologists. The outgoing deputy, Jean-Louis Touraine (PS then LREM), does not represent himself. In addition, this constituency is made up of part of the 7th, 3rd and 8th arrondissements. Three boroughs where environmentalists had recorded among their best scores in the 2020 local elections.

She is the metropolitan councilor of Villeurbanne Zemorda Khelifi who will present himself in the 6th, constituency (which intersects the contours of the city), according to the regional daily Progress. Unless an agreement is reached with the Socialist Party which has invested Cristina Martineau for these legislative elections.

The PS had succeeded, with Cédric Van Styvaendel, in retaining the town hall in 2020. In a moribund situation and faced with an environmental candidate in the presidential election who is not taking off in the polls, it is hard to see the PS not doing everything to try to keep hold of this stronghold.

Outside Lyon, very little hope for environmentalists in the 2022 legislative elections in the Rhône

In addition, the local press indicates that Benjamin Badouard will be a candidate in the 4th district which includes part of the 3rd and the 6th arrondissement. A constituency historically favorable to the right, won by Anne Brugnera (LREM) in 2017. Another constituency that is not very favorable for environmentalists: the 5th, the one including Caluire and Limonest in particular. This is Nathan Guedjone of the kingpins of EELV during the last departmental elections in the Rhône in particular, who will be a candidate.

Emmanuelle Lonaret and Thomas Fournier, will be candidates respectively in the 13th and 14th constituencies of the Rhône. The 13th, including in particular Meyzieu, part of Saint-Priest, Décines, Meyzieu or Jonage, seems very unfavorable to environmentalists.

The 14th constituency, comprising Vénissieux, Feyzin, Saint-Fons and another part of Saint-Priest, is much more favorable to the left. But this sector could also be the subject of an agreement between the various forces on the left, in particular the well-established PCF with its candidate and mayor of Vénissieux, Michèle Picard.
