Are energy drinks dangerous or not? This is the question – Oradea alive

Doctors and professors from the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester/Minnesota, USA, warn that energy drinks can lead to heart attacks. Around 20% of heart attack patients have previously drunk energy drinks. This is the conclusion reached by researchers after a study, recently published in the specialist journal Heart Rhythm, which specializes in heart problems.

Cardiologist Michael Ackermann, coordinator of the study, says that the study began with the desire to discover the genetic causes of heart attacks. His team worked with 144 heart attack survivors. During the interviews and the analyses, the doctors found that a good part of the patients consumed energy drinks before the heart attack. They were between 21 and 37 years old.

“The energy drink market has grown significantly in recent years and is mainly aimed at teenagers and young adults. Most manufacturers boast that they use natural products and dietary supplements, which we can eat without problems,” says Dr. Ackermann. In this age group, energy drinks are the second dietary supplement used by consumers after vitamins.

Dr. Michael Ackermann specifies that, in addition to a high concentration of caffeine, the beloved drinks contain a significant amount of sweeteners, for taste, Glucuronolactone, which eliminates the state of fatigue, but in a greater quantity than the body to process, high level. a collection of Isonitol, which affects the metabolism and the level of hormones responsible for sleep, as well as Taurine, an amino acid that has a positive effect on the activity of the heart. That is if he didn’t spill five times more than she needs.

Cardiologists say that a dose of energy drinks, among the authorized ones, made by major brands around the world, contains 300 mg of caffeine, three times more than filter coffee .

“Previous studies have shown that more than 10 coffees a day can cause a heart attack. The same can be said for those who drink three energy drinks a day. But no one knows how a cocktail of caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone and isonitol will produce effect and strength.”

It is even more difficult when young people combine energy drinks with alcohol at parties. Caffeine masks the numbing effects of alcohol. In the case of athletes who turn to energy drinks to improve their performance, the complementary products lead to an inaccurate assessment of their own abilities and limits.

Cardiologist Ehud Chorin from Tel Aviv University says that foods that cause heart problems are an underestimated medical problem.

“There are more and more substances in foods that affect the rhythm of the heart or even disturb it. Energy drinks are in this category.”

Another problem is that heart attack sufferers often have an unknown genetic condition or disease, so they have no idea that they should stay away from medications.

The heart attack survivors in the study who had previously drunk energy drinks had other problems: severe sleep deprivation, poor feeding or extreme fasting, use of antipsychotic drugs, difficult births. The result was a real hurricane to the heart.

Obviously, it can be about coincidence in all these cases. For this reason additional data is needed. But it would be reckless for doctors not to sound the alarm, say the cardiologists who were involved in the research.
