Are Electric Cars Environmentally Friendly? Transitioning to Greener Energy

Jakarta

Electric cars are environmentally friendly vehicles because they do not emit any emissions or exhaust gases at all. But there are also those who say that electric cars are not environmentally friendly because they use electricity generated from coal-fired power plants (PLTU) which are highly polluting.

Responding to this accusation, Executive Director of the Secretariat of the Electric Mobility Ecosystem Association (AEML) Anugraha Dezmercoledi said that everything requires a process. Of course one day, it is hoped that electric cars can use electricity from environmentally friendly power plants.

“So if we want to process it, we can’t do it all at once. It has to be done in stages. Of course, we hope that from the upstream side, it can transition to greener energy. In this way, the carbon footprint on the BEV (battery electric car) will be even lower,” said Anugraha at the 2023 GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) arena, at ICE-BSD City, Tangerang (18/8/2023).

Anugraha emphasized that it was not a short job and had to go through a long process. “I also heard that PLN (State Electricity Company) will stop new permits for PLTU construction. That’s a good step in my opinion,” continued the man who is familiarly called Nugi.

He continued to add, electric cars remain environmentally friendly even though they still use electricity from generators that are not environmentally friendly. When compared to conventional cars, the CO2 emissions that are ‘produced’ by electric cars using electricity from PLTU are still much lower.

“It’s definitely (environmentally friendly). If I’m not mistaken, 1 liter of fuel (fuel oil) produces 2.4 kg of CO2 equivalent. 1 liter of fuel is approximately equivalent to 1.2 kWh, which is now used in EVs ( electric vehicles) with electricity, let’s say most of it is still from the PLTU, it can produce around 1.2 kWh, still a difference of around 1.2 kg CO2 equivalent. This is not from the EV side which is definitely zero emissions, but from its carbon footprint ,” continued Nugi.

“This is what we are trying to continue to educate, both within AEML itself, and also externally, so that from the energy side or the upstream side we can start to transition. And this will get better in the future,” he explained.
