Are Bio Farma’s and Sinovac’s COVID-19 Vaccines the Same? Know the Facts Behind It

Jakarta

Is it true Bio Farma’s vaccine is Sinovac? These two types of vaccines are often confusing to the public.

Not a few people suspect that the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Bio Farma is not the Sinovac vaccine. The reason is, they have different vaccine names and packaging.

Please note, there are two kinds of Sinovac vaccines that come from China, namely vaccines in finished or ready-to-use form and vaccines that are still in the form of raw materials (bulk).

Bio Farma itself is in charge of producing Sinovac vaccine which is still in bulk form. When the vaccine has been produced, Bio Farma distributes it throughout Indonesia.

Therefore, it can be concluded that Bio Farma’s vaccine is Sinovac. Both are made from the same type of raw material, which is derived from an inactivated virus, and can provide protection against exposure to COVID-19.

Is it true that there is no difference between the Bio Farma and Sinovac vaccines?

In this regard, the President Director of Bio Farma Honesti Basyir once said that the Sinovac vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine produced were made from the same raw material. It’s just that both have different names and packaging.

The COVID-19 vaccine produced by Bio Farma is called the COVID-19 Vaccine, while the Sinovac vaccine has the name CoronaVac.

“Please note that the packaging for the COVID-19 vaccine this time will be named COVID-19 Vaccine. It has a different packaging from the previous one that was distributed, namely CoronaVac,” he said on the Presidential Secretariat YouTube, Tuesday (2/2/2021).

Then the Sinovac vaccine that arrived from China was packaged in a single dose or single dose. One box contains 40 vials or 40 doses.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Bio Farma is packaged in multidose form, where one vial contains 10 doses. The vaccine is packaged in a box containing 10 vials.

“This difference in packaging will not distinguish the quality of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Honesti.

In addition, these two COVID-19 vaccines have received an emergency use permit (EUA) from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM). The Sinovac vaccine received EUA on January 11, 2021, while the Bio Farma vaccine on February 16, 2021.

Both are given in a span of 28 days, between the first and second doses. Therefore, people don’t need to be confused anymore, because Bio Farma’s vaccine is Sinovac.
