On Sunday evening, ARD viewers sat confused in front of their screens. No dialogue could be heard in the “crime scene” for minutes. That caused displeasure.
The latest Stuttgart “Tatort: Torn” on Sunday was actually supposed to revolve around the story of a 13-year-old who suffers under the burden of his criminal family. But the case quickly became a minor matter – because the spectators couldn’t hear anything.
Right from the start, ARD had to contend with a technical glitch. From 8:15 p.m. to 8:26 p.m., the crucial soundtrack with the actors’ dialogues was missing. Only music and background noise played. The actors were silent, only their lips moved. This meant that important information about the plot was withheld from the audience.
This caused discontent in front of the television screens. Numerous viewers vented their anger on X (formerly Twitter). “No speech for ten minutes and none of the ARD idiots seem to notice,” complained one user. Another also criticized: “Eleven minutes with no sound and then no restart, no apology. But the main thing is that the GEZ collects money. No words!” “You can’t really expect a soundtrack for 8.6 billion,” someone teased.
After the audio glitch, the episode continued as usual. A spokeswoman for First German Television confirmed to the German Press Agency later in the evening that there had been a nationwide problem with the playback of Dolby Surround. The center channel, where voices and dialogue are normally heard, was disturbed. According to ARD, there were no problems with stereo TV sets. The episode with dialogues could also be viewed in the media library.
