Former gymnast Kim Bui has made it her mission to raise awareness about eating disorders in sports. That cannot be overestimated. Because the signs are often overlooked or ignored.

She no longer has a scale in her house today. Because Kim Bui had climbed on the scales for years, before every training session, before every competition. Weight control was as much a part of gymnast Kim Bui’s life as twists, somersaults and vomiting, sometimes multiple times a day. “100 grams less than yesterday – it would be a good day. 100 grams more than yesterday – it would be a shitty day,” she writes in her biography. Kim Bui survived, and that’s no exaggeration: eating disorders can be fatal.
