ARD and DIE ZEIT launch joint podcast “Money Power Qatar”

In the eight-part podcast series “Money Power Qatar”, journalist Pune Djalilevand (rbb) and journalists Yassin Musharbash (DIE ZEIT) and Benedikt Nabben (BR) address the various facets of Qatar: how did the small desert state become so rich and powerful? Why is Qatar cooperating with Hamas and the Taliban? What’s behind the planned gas deal between Qatar and Germany? And what goal does Qatar pursue with major sporting events such as the World Cup? The first joint podcast from ARD and DIE ZEIT will start on 13 September 2022 in the ARD Audiothek and on ZEIT ONLINE. The other episodes appear on Tuesdays with a weekly rhythm.

In the first episode “Land of Cockaigne with a dark side – Qatar 360 degrees” the three journalists have a first impression of the country during a joint trip. Meeting Qatar was difficult. They form a closed and privileged club. 90 percent of the people working in Qatar are migrants: some of them live in inhumane conditions. The second episode highlights the country as an important player in world sport. Sport resembles a powerful PR machine, which becomes clear when you look at the big football teams.

The “Money Power Qatar” podcast is moderated by Lena Petersen (rbb). Marc Krüger (rbb) leads the project. ZEIT editor Lea Frehse and her colleagues Fritz Zimmermann and Ingo Malcher can also be heard as guests.

The related television documentary “Geld.Macht.Katar.”, A co-production of the two political magazines Kontraste (rbb) and report Munich (BR), will be available from 22 September in the ARD media library. In addition, the documentary will air in two parts on 20 and 22 September at 21:45 the first. A thematically related ZEIT dossier will also be published on 22 September.

“Geld Macht Qatar” is the first podcast that ARD and DIE ZEIT have jointly developed. The first episode is of 13 September in ARD audio library to listen as well as on TIME ONLINE and wherever there are podcasts.
