Arctic Storms and Freezing Weather Cause Chaos Across the United States

Freezing weather covered much of the United States on Sunday, and arctic storms created conditions for blizzards in the Northeast and snow accumulation in southern areas, the Associated Press reported.

The National Weather Service warned that strong winds in the states of Montana and the Dakotas could lead to minus 56 degrees Celsius.

An estimated 95 million people live in regions that have been issued wind warnings and temperatures below minus 17 degrees Celsius, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said the bitter cold was expected to reach as far south as northern parts of the state of Texas.

Even parts of northern Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia also received snow.

Authorities warned people not to drive on roads in Buffalo, New York state on the Canadian border, where up to 2 feet of snow was forecast. More than half the flights to and from Buffalo International Airport were canceled. Airports across the country are affected. Dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport and Seattle International Airport.

Forecasters also warned today that heavy snowfall and gusty winds could cause drastic and sudden drops in visibility across eastern Pennsylvania and parts of northern New Jersey and Delaware.

Another arctic storm that brought heavy snowfall to the Rockies looks set to move south and could bring up to 6 inches of snow to parts of Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders has declared a state of emergency.

More than 150,000 Oregon homes and businesses are without power after severe snowstorms. Widespread power outages affecting tens of thousands of homes occurred in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Bad weather in Oregon caused the death of three people.

Deaths related to the cold and snow were already reported earlier in the week in California, Idaho, Illinois and Wisconsin.
