The record cold freezes Russia, where temperatures in some places have dropped to -55°! The coldest day since the beginning of winter was recorded in Moscow, local sites reported, cited by meteobalkans.com.
The very cold zone that usually operates in the central Arctic is currently shifted north of Russia, causing unusually cold weather in the high and mid-latitudes of the country.
Northern Siberia turned out to be the epicenter of not only the Russian frost, but also the cold in the entire hemisphere. In Taimyr and Evenkia the temperature dropped to -50°. This is a serious anomaly, since the deviation from the norm reaches 15 degrees. A storm warning has been issued for these locations.
On January 7-8, severe frosts up to -50° … -55° will continue in the southern part of the mentioned regions, reports gismeteo.ru.
Last night in Moscow was the coldest since the beginning of winter
According to updated data, the minimum air temperature in the Russian capital today was -23.5°C. By this indicator, Christmas night in Moscow (it is celebrated on January 6 in the old style – note ed.) became the third coldest in the 21st century.
On the territory of the Moscow region, for the first time this season, the cold has crossed the 30-degree mark. In the northern part of the district, in Taldom, the minimum air temperature was -31.4°!
Neighboring regions are not far behind: last night 30-degree frosts were recorded in the Vladimir and Ivanovo regions, and in Tver and Yaroslavl the air temperature dropped below -35°! The coldest in the central region was in the Kostroma region – in the city of Sharya the air temperature was -38.0°C.
Such Christmas frosts happen once every 12 years
In Moscow, there is a reverse diurnal course of temperature, that is, when the thermometers go down and do not go up during the day, as expected. This marks the beginning of one of the longest Christmas cold periods in the region with background temperatures 10-12° below the climatic norm in midwinter.
According to the Moscow climate, this type of Christmas frost occurs on average no more than once every 12 years, writes meteovesti.ru.
Forecasts
With great confidence, local meteorologists say that the cooling peak in the central regions of European Russia has passed, and although the coming night will be only tenths of a degree warmer, a trend of easing cold is already emerging. The rise in temperatures is expected to be smooth and gradual and it won’t be until the second half of the first working week of 2023 that thermometer readings return to normal for the season.
