On August 18, 1855, the Queen of England disembarked in Boulogne – she re-embarked there on the 27th – where the Emperor Napoleon III was waiting for her for a diplomatic trip to France lasting around ten days, with, among other things, a visit from World Expo. This trip to France by the royal family of England, considered a triumph for French diplomacy, further sealed the rapprochement between the two countries, which were then fighting side by side in the Crimea.
In commemoration of the event, the city of Boulogne decides to engrave a medal, with on one side the effigy of the emperor and on the other, below the indication ” The Emperor of the French receives the Queen of England in Boulogne
», an allegorical representation of the city. To his right stands Napoleon’s column, to his left Queen Victoria’s royal yacht. At his feet, an escutcheon recalls the arms of the city. While most copies are struck in bronze or silver, two would have been struck in gold, one for the emperor and one for the queen.
