At the end of October, Architecture Week will be celebrated in Riga with a series of events, the Latvian Union of Architects (LAS) informed. Architecture Week will end with the solemn awarding ceremony of the “Latvian Architecture of the Year Awards 2020”, which will take place on Friday, October 30, when the winners of the highest award in Latvian architecture will be announced.
Given the prevalence of Covid-19, the public and industry are invited to participate in the events remotely this year.
The theme of the “Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2020” is “Unforeseen consequences”. “The theme makes you think of consequences that are impossible to imagine or predict when drawing and thinking about projects. For cubic meters of construction debris recorded neutrally in projects, or for happy coincidences that occur – unplanned and unseen. At the same time, it is necessary to think about a pandemic, which has made previously functional things unusable, while others – about the new standard. It is necessary to think from as many aspects as possible to avoid negative consequences, but always take into account that the unforeseen will happen, ”explained the Union of Architects.
“Latvian Architecture of the Year Awards 2020” was opened on October 26 nominee an exhibition of works that is publicly available to anyone interested. This year, the exhibition is divided into several points, where each is dedicated to one nominated object.
The works are placed on advertising stands in the urban environment of Riga.
The exhibition features nine nominees nominated by the selection jury – “Transformation of the Melluži Concert Garden”, “Hanseatic Platform”. Exhibition points of the works of the nominees of the Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2020
An open discussion on architecture “Unforeseen Consequences” will take place on Wednesday, October 28. which will be available live on the Facebook page of the Latvian Architects’ Union. The discussion application outlines: ” Due to the pandemic, various places and their functions have become unusable, or on the contrary – have acquired a different meaning and become in demand. These are the consequences we are seeing in the current situation. However, regardless of the situation, the architect must always look to the future and try to plan for the unforeseen. ” Representatives of the selection jury, architects Artūrs Lapiņš, Brigita Bula and Ināra Caunīte, as well as architectural critic Vents Vīnbergs will take part in the discussion.
On Friday, October 30, at 15.00, the day of the “Latvian Architecture of the Year Awards 2020” ceremony will be opened by the open lectures of the jury, which will take place in the premises of the Latvian Architects’ Union and will be virtually available to anyone interested. In the lectures, the final jury, architects Andro Mänd, Octavio Mestre, Gustė Kančaitė and Tomas Petreikis, will talk about various topics that are important today, such as the consequences that have arisen. directly in school architecture in the wake of the pandemic. A small number of people will be able to watch the lectures in person.
The series of events of the Architecture Week will be concluded by the solemn awarding ceremony of the “Latvian Architecture of the Year Awards 2020”, which will take place on October 30, at 19.00, in the Aistere Hall of the H2O 6th quarter. During the ceremony, it will be announced which objects and processes have received the highest awards in Latvian architecture. This year, the public will be invited to watch the ceremony online.
The winners will be selected by the LAGB 2020 final jury, composed of architect Andro Mänd, who has worked for architects such as KAVAKAVA and Salto, and is currently the President of the Estonian Architects’ Union; architect and manager of the architectural firm “KANCAS” Gustė Kančaitė, who was nominated for the title of Kaunas Architect of the Year in 2018; architect and lecturer Octavio Mestre, who is also the co-director of the digital publication “t18”, as well as the head of the architectural firm “Brigita Bula arhitekti” Brigita Bula, who last year received the Latvian Architecture Grand Annual Award for the project “Salt House in Pāvilosta” ‘.
