Archdiocese of Paderborn donates 500,000 euros for humanitarian aid in Gaza

By CNA German Newsroom

With regard to the situation in Gaza, Paderborn Archbishop Udo Bentz emphasized that the “humanitarian catastrophe, the hardship that the people of Gaza suffer every day, must not be overlooked.” Against this background, a total of half a million euros will be donated.

“The Malteser International aid organization receives 250,000 euros for the use of a mobile hospital,” the Archdiocese of Paderborn announced on Friday. “The transport of relief goods to the crisis region is supported by the Archdiocese of Paderborn with donations of 125,000 euros each to Malteser International and Caritas International. This will enable both organizations to deliver relief goods for a period of six months.”

Bentz stated: “The aid supplies that have been introduced so far are far from sufficient to cover the ever-increasing needs.”

There has been war in the Holy Land since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The Archdiocese of Paderborn said: “More than 70,000 buildings have been destroyed in Gaza since October 7th, the Gaza Strip is covered in devastation and destruction. Almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip lives in emergency shelters. In this precarious situation, the risk of communicable diseases increases.” In addition, there are thousands of deaths – not only in Gaza, but also in Israel and other regions of the Middle East.

Bentz explained that the place of the church is “on the side of those who suffer from the consequences of violence – no matter what people, no matter what religion these people belong to. As a church, we are advocates for the dignity of all people.”

The archbishop appealed for donations to help “so that people in Gaza can help their fellow human beings. The situation is more than dramatic and help is more than urgently needed. It’s about hope in a double sense: Our hope for an end to the violence motivates us to help the people in Gaza. And our help gives the local people new hope.”

He hopes that the Archdiocese of Paderborn’s donation of half a million euros “will be an encouragement for the people in the Archdiocese to help themselves, to donate to the people in Gaza and thereby give them prospects for survival.”
