Mexico City. The vicar general of the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico, Salvador González Morales, on the occasion of the elections, sent a document to the seven vicars of the religious demarcation, so that the religious refrain from carrying out any act that could “pressure or induce ” to the parishioners to “make the vote in some sense.”
The internal document, dated April 18, 2024, states that the objective is to “underline the prohibition that religious associations have from carrying out any type of political or partisan proselytism in the context of liturgical celebrations and other pastoral activities” as well as “ remind all Catholic faithful of their right and obligation to participate in elections in a free, conscious and responsible manner.”
González Morales, auxiliary bishop and moderator of the curia, the vicars are requested to “instruct parish priests, rectors of churches and other ministers of worship in their pastoral area to place this notice in their respective places of worship” and to the agents of pastoral exhort them to “refrain from any act that could be interpreted as inducing or coercing the vote of the faithful.”
