Plovdiv archaeologists have discovered the craftsmen’s quarter with the workshops of the ancient city. The studios are underway on private land on the corner of ‘Petko D. Petkov’ and ‘Captain Raicho’ streets, a reporter said Plovdiv24.bg.
Zdravka Korkutova and Desislava Davidova carried out the search in the nearby land, which is already built on. There they came across a pottery kiln and on the current property they found storage rooms apparently connected to the kiln. There are signs that the workshop was destroyed in a major fire.
Coins from the 4th to 6th centuries were found at the site, which need to be cleaned and preserved, Zdravka Korkutova told the media. Pottery and a beautiful dolphin lamp were also found, believed to have been imported. In the investigated site there are no fortified walls, but there is a covering of parts of two roads in an east-west and north-south direction.
Archaeologists were present at the push of the old buildings. They were found to have deeply drilled foundations reaching into the ancient layer. The masons of the old houses often reused part of the stones, because at the time the material was very expensive.
“Investors are very understanding. They provide everything necessary for our work. This is a good example of interaction between a private investor and a state institution” – Zdravka Korkutova does not spare her superlatives.
Archaeological research will continue in the next calendar year.
