/ world today news/ A team of archaeologists led by Prof. Margarita Vaklinova will continue the research of the discovered rich house in the ancient city of Nikopolis ad Nestum in Garmen.
The scientists will be in the field after September 15 and will work for a month.
“So far, we have uncovered two thirds of the building, which was of great importance at that time for the local residents. We received BGN 25,000 from the state budget. With these funds, we will not be able to uncover the entire building, which is located on an area of over one acre “, stated Prof. Vaklinova. Nicopolis ad Nestum was built by the Roman emperor Trajan after the subjugation of the Dacians in 106 AD and the accession of Dacia to the Roman Empire.
The opulent house at the southeast end of the grounds is the first thing that impresses the visitor upon entering the site. The rooms in the Roman palace are arranged around a square courtyard paved with cobblestones. In its center there is a well, and in it archaeologists have found coins from the 2nd century. Later – in the 4th century, the colonnade was built, surrounding the courtyard from all sides. The house was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in the middle of the 5th century. Now, however, there is every opportunity to raise the preserved columns in their place, to reconstruct the building. “In this building we found a huge amount of coins, coin weights, at the same time there were kitchens and warehouses,” said Prof. Vaklinova.
