Archaeological findings were discovered during the reconstruction of Šilelis street

Good news for the residents of Šilelis Street in Alytus. The reconstruction works of the street, which were suspended last year, should be completed in July. A section 256 meters long and 5 meters wide will be paved, a rainwater collection system will be installed and the street lighting will be reconstructed.

Since the managed territory borders and in some places falls into the territory of the cultural heritage – the former Alytus manor, therefore, archeological excavations had to be carried out in October and November last year (on an area of ​​173 meters), and the reconstruction of the street was stopped. During the research, a valuable archaeological layer was found with a considerable amount of archaeological ceramic and numismatic finds, and the 19th century was also unearthed. 2nd half – 20th century 1 half-masonry fragment, so it was recommended to carry out additional archaeological research, but in November at the end of the season of archaeological research, the work was moved to March of this year. During the suspension of the contract work, the technical design solutions were also adjusted, and it was specified to preserve a healthy and mature maple.

The representatives of cultural heritage allowed the builders to continue the work from April 2. Reconstruction of the street will cost about 350 thousand euros.
