The arch bridge from 1936 has been redundant for seventeen years, because the A2 has been given two new bridges over the Lek near Vianen. The arch bridge has not become a monument and has not been given a new function. However, its preservation cost money, so it was decided to remove the bridge.
Not all remnants of the building will disappear, however. The large piers under the bridge have been preserved. These are part of the New Dutch Waterline and also serve as protection for the pillars of the adjacent bridges over the Lek. The pillars are also being set up for bats to live in, Rijkswaterstaat reports.
The bridge weighs nearly 5,000 tons, almost as much as 27 Boeing 747 aircraft combined.
