In the Super League 1 league teams have a list of referees who are… welcome and unwelcome at their games! The Central Arbitration Committee was informed in time about the specific lists and adjusted its definitions according to the “wants” of the players just so as not to displease them. The reasoning of the previous chief referees was that they should not add fuel to the fire before the start of the matches by appointing the referees.

According to all indications, the French referee Stéphane Lanois is not going to follow the path of his predecessors who created “children and children” in the microcosm of refereeing. The head of the KED, at least at the beginning of his term, will not take into account the lists of PAE and will designate the referees without asterisks. A leading example in the SL1 premiere was the designation of Tasos Sidiropoulos in the match between Panathinaikos and Asteras Tripoli, whose management threatened that he would not come down to compete in the OAKA. Graphics that Lanois ignored and thus sent the message to all teams that they cannot have a say in the referees’ definitions. This is the person in charge of the Greek arbitration, he will decide.
Lanois also appointed Yiannis Papadopoulos in the game Volos – Olympiacos, even though the international referee is not liked by Piraeus PAE, whose administration had advocated his removal from the league table. Papadopoulos not only stayed on the scoreboard, but also whistled Olympiakos’ first match in the league!
The French referee’s decision not to… listen to the wishes of the teams has a double purpose: the first, as mentioned, is to ensure that there are no “children and children” in the Greek refereeing. The second is a clear message to the referees. With their performance they have to prove that teams are wrong to target them and ask not to be defined in their games.
Second chance
Lanois will stand by the Greek referees and give them a second chance if a game goes wrong. The elites of KED know that they are not going to find themselves on the sidelines if they screw up once. After all, there is also the VAR cushion for serious mistakes.
However the under-performing referees will have to prove in the next few games that they can whistle at a first-class level and are not on the board because they have… barbs in Koroni. This is also a directive of the UEFA Refereeing Committee, which does not “terminate” referees who make serious mistakes in a match. It gives them more opportunities and at the end of the period the fund is made.
Until now, different rules applied in Greek football. The powers that be decided the fortunes of the Greek referees and the rule was also applied to the current season’s table, which Lanois found ready. He didn’t even have time to make the choice himself. Referees who continue in CL1 will have the support of the chief referee as long as they have a satisfactory level of performance and show signs of improvement. The question is what will happen if the president of KED accepts pressure from the barons of the ball. The most likely scenario, if the situation comes to an end, is that he resigns and leaves before the end of the season. If something like this happens, then the new KED and Greek football in general will not have any help from the relevant UEFA committee. This development will be a serious setback for our football, however the … ear of the big players is not going to sweat.
