Former World No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was a guest on Spanish radio show El Larguero and expressed her displeasure with the way she was portrayed in King Richard. In one scene in the film, a 14-year-old Venus Williams competed against Sanchez Vicario at the Bank of the West Classic.
On the scene, Williams was in complete control of the match as she led 6-2, 3-1 before Sanchez Vicario took a toilet break. After the toilet break, Sanchez Vicario won the match. “The moment they portrayed me as a very bad person was when I lost 2-6 and 1-3 is completely wrong.
As far as I know I was leading,” Sanchez Vicario was quoted as saying by Marca. “It’s impossible that I would have left the pitch 1-3 because in balanced games you can never leave, if ever I would be 2-3 gone.
The toilet break is limited. I would have been penalized if I stayed longer. The thing is what gives the film its importance. Otherwise the film cannot become relevant. I’ve had a brilliant career, nobody gave me anything to achieve what I got and I don’t understand what it means when they take that away from me.
I recommend it because it’s an epic film and it’s about effort. ”
Sanchez Vicario: I knew Serena Williams would be better than Venus
After voicing her displeasure with how she was portrayed in King Richard, Sanchez Vicario added that she has a good relationship with Richard Williams.
Additionally, Sanchez Vicario said she knew Serena would be the better of the two Williams sisters, “I have a good relationship with Richard Williams and when his two daughters were on tour everyone was talking about Venus and I said to the father, ‘That one ‘who will be really good and win more will be Serena.’
I saw her play and I knew Serena would be better than Venus. I know both, I’ve played against them a lot,” added Sanchez Vicaro.
