Arantxa Rus is stranded in Paris for the eighth time in a row directly at Grand Slam | NOW

Arantxa Rus was immediately eliminated from a Grand Slam tournament for the eighth consecutive time on Tuesday. The Dutch had to acknowledge her superiority at Roland Garros in Jelena Rybakina, the number sixteen in the world and the quarterfinalist of last year.

It became 1-6, 7-5 and 2-6 for Rybakina in a match that was abandoned on Monday at a score of 1-6 and 4-2 due to rain. During the remainder of Tuesday, Rus (WTA-78) gave her higher-ranked opponent a good match, but she drew the short straw.

In the second set, Rus trailed 4-5 and survived a match point. In the deciding set, Rybakina took a 0-2 lead, after which Rus fought back to 2-2. In the following games, she came up just short against the Kazakh, who used her next match point in the eighth game.

The 31-year-old Russian is working on a long, disappointing series at Grand Slams. Since she reached the second round of Roland Garros at the beginning of 2020, she has been stranded in one of the four major tournaments.

At Roland Garros, Rus made it to the third round in 2011 and reached the fourth round a year later. However, in 2013, 2018, 2020 and 2021 she was immediately eliminated, just like during this year’s edition. In the intervening seasons, she did not compete in Paris.

The elimination of Russian means that there are no longer any Dutch women active in Roland Garros singles. In the men’s tournament, Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon groenpoor are still in the tournament.

Arantxa Rus has not been able to make it to the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for a while.
