Arabia continues to burn, Britain and the US attack the Houthis in Yemen

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) and British military reportedly attacked Houthi targets in Hodeidah, the western region of Yemen, on Thursday (8/8/2024). This is the second attack in the last 24 hours.

Houthi-run Al-Masirah said a “reconnaissance” aircraft carried out two strikes in Hodeidah’s Al-Jabanah district. They did not name a specific location or say if there were any injuries or property damage.

The attack came a day after US and British troops attacked Houthi positions in Taiz province.

US Central Command said its forces destroyed two Houthi drones, a ground control station and three anti-ship cruise missiles in an area controlled by the militia.

They said Houthi weapons pose a threat to US-led naval coalition ships as well as other naval and commercial vessels in international waters.

“This reckless and dangerous behavior by the Iran-backed Houthis continues to threaten regional stability and security,” he said. Arab news on Friday (9/8/2024).

In response to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea and other waters, the US established a coalition of maritime task forces to protect ships. The US also designated the Houthis as a terrorist group and launched attacks on Sanaa, Hodeidah, Saada and other areas controlled by the group.

The Houthis have ignored the attacks and the international demands for de-escalation in the Red Sea. Instead, they expanded operations to the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, and vowed to continue attacking ships until Israel ended its war on the Gaza Strip.

On Wednesday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said militia forces fired drones and ballistic missiles at the US Navy destroyers USS Cole and USS Laboon in the Gulf of Aden and attacked the merchant ship Contship Ono with ballistic missiles and drones.

According to the Marinetraffic website, Contship Ono was a cargo ship that sailed under the Liberian flag in the Red Sea on Thursday after arriving at the Port of Jeddah. The Houthi group said that the ship was targeted because the parent company gave permission for the ship to sail to an Israeli port.
