The activities of “Arab Cinema Week”, organized by “Cinema Akil” in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, during the period between 15 and 26 October, will witness the screening of the Palestinian film “Science”, directed by Firas Khoury.
The events of the film, which won seven international awards, revolve around “Tamer”, a Palestinian teenager who lives a traditional life. He and his friends are in high school, until their beautiful classmate “Maysa” appears, and to gain her admiration, “Tamer” agrees to participate in a mysterious operation called “Teaching”. », turns his life upside down.
The film was written and directed by Firas Khoury, and starring: Mahmoud Bakri, Cyrine Khass, Saleh Bakri, Muhammad Karaki, Ahmed Zaghmouri, and Muhammad Abdel Rahman.
During the past months, the film was screened at the following festivals: “Toronto International Film Festival,” “Red Sea International Film Festival,” “Santa Barbara International Film Festival,” “Arab Film Festival” in San Diego, “Film Platform” in Marseille, and “Film Platform” in Marseille. Panorama Cinema of the Maghreb and the Middle East,” and “Roma Cinema,” and also witnessed a series of successful commercial screenings at Zawya Cinema in Cairo.
Film Awards:
During its career, the film won seven awards, the most recent of which was the “Best Debut Award” from the “Tétouan Mediterranean Film Festival,” and three awards at the “Cairo International Film Festival” last year, where it received its first Arab screening, namely: “The Pyramid Award.” The Golden Award for Best Film” in the international competition, the “Audience Vote Award (Youssef Sharif Rizkallah),” and the “Best Actor Award” for Mahmoud Bakri. The film also won the “Youth Jury Award” at the “Mediterranean Film Festival” in Brussels, and two awards. “Best First Act” and “Netpack for Best Asian Act” at the Kerala International Film Festival.
Positive criticism:
The film was critically celebrated, with film critic Jason Delgado writing about it on the Film Threat website, saying: “(Science) is an enjoyable viewing experience, unlike many films that deal with political issues, and credit goes to the film maker who added human touches to the work.” While Namrata Joshi, writing in the New Indian Express, said that the film “is characterized by lightness and freshness, as it addresses the importance of politically educating the youth.”
Support…and grants:
The film project “Science” received funding from the Doha Film Institute in 2015, was selected to participate in the “Cinefundación” workshop at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2017, and was shown at the Venice Finance Market in 2019. It received a grant worth $10,000 from the Cairo Film Forum, and a grant. He developed the scenario with $20,000 from the Abu Dhabi Film Festival Fund (SANAD), and he also participated in the Atlas workshops at the International Film Festival in Marrakesh.
Firas Khoury card:
Firas Khoury is a Palestinian director, who holds a bachelor’s degree in cinema, and has many short films to his credit, including films that won many awards, such as: “Seven Days in Deir Paul” (2007) and “Sfeir” (2010), which were shown in Many festivals and on television channels, including: Arte and VVD. In 2019, he finished his short film, “A Green Maradona,” which had its world premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and has been showing on Netflix since October 15, 2021.
