JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV– Former volleyball athlete of the Indonesian Women’s National Team, Aprilia Manganang, has been confirmed as a man. The Chief of Staff of the Army (KSAD) General Andika Perkasa conveyed assurance from the results of the examination by the health team at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital, Jakarta.
“Because the examination at Manado Hospital was limited, I finally summoned him to Jakarta. I offered him what we can help, because Sgt. Aprilia is claimed to be a woman but her physical appearance is also not like other women. Apparently Sgt. Manganang welcomes her with excitement, “Said Andika Perkasa in a press conference at AD Headquarters, Jakarta, Tuesday (9/3/2021).

Aprilia is a member of the Kops Wanita Army (Kowad) with the rank of second sergeant, after retiring as a volleyball athlete. Aprilia was born in Tahuna, North Sulawesi on 27 April 1992 and started her career as a volleyball athlete professionally in 2011 when she joined the Alco Bandung team. Since then, Aprilia Manganang has won the Proliga competition four times.
Aprilia’s case is not the first in the world of athletes in the country. Previously there was Karnah Sukarta Wirasaputra, who was known for her achievements in the javelin field and had participated in the Olympics in Tokyo in 1958.
However, on December 30, 1981, Karnah experienced an unusual event. Just overnight suddenly turned into a boy. Karnah, who was born in Ciamis, West Java, on August 1, 1940, later changed her name to Iwan Setiawan Setiadihardja Wirasaputra.
