Five years after the massive mobilizations of April 2018, the demand for memory, truth and justice remains alive to this day, according to the Center for Transdisciplinary Studies of Central America (CETCAM).
In their Perspectives report that they presented on April 20, the center details this demand, which for them constitutes a priority, but “it also becomes relevant in the event of a possible transition. Memory, truth and justice have become a fundamental pillar for the construction of democracy in Nicaragua”.
They also make it clear that the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship has imposed a police state on Nicaraguan society, committing crimes against humanity and reestablishing diplomatic relations with China and Russia, two powers that dispute control of Central America.
“We are not going to accept a political transition that does not go through justice”
“A hope”
According to the analysis carried out by the center, April represents for Nicaraguans “continued hope for change.” “April is not a momentum, it is actually the folding point from one era to another. Its perspective and scope is medium and long term because it represents the realization of the desires for several generations of young people”, adds the report.
CETCAM rescues the scope of the report presented by the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua (GHREN) before the United Nations Human Rights Council, which documents in detail the violations committed against Nicaraguans by the Ortega Murillo regime and these are classified as crimes against humanity.
In the same document they highlight the distance that several progressive governments in Latin America have taken with respect to Nicaragua and the extension of the mandate of the Group of Experts for a couple more years in order to deepen the investigations.
According to CETCAM, “at least during the last decade, both China and Russia have developed differentiated strategies of rapprochement with the countries of the region in order to gain ground in different fields, this has alerted the United States since the chances of winning space are high because both powers have become models that reinforce authoritarian tendencies in Central America.
