April 8, in the Orthodox calendar, is the day of remembrance of the apostles Rufus, Agave, Herodion, Asyncritus, Phlegon and Hermas. They were apostles from the 70 whom Jesus Christ sent to preach the Gospel. Herodion was from Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, Asia Minor, and was a compatriot of the Apostle Paul. He became a bishop in Neopatria and experienced many sufferings for his faith, both from Jews and pagans. After one of these torments, considering him dead, his enemies left his husband, but he, supported by God’s grace, recovered and continued to preach in Rome along with the Apostle Peter.
Agabus had the gift of prophecy and preached in Jerusalem and Judea. He predicted a great famine that occurred during the time of Emperor Claudius, and predicted that the Apostle Paul would be bound in Jerusalem and delivered into the hands of the pagans.
Ruth was a bishop in the city of Tibes in Greece. It is mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the letter to the Romans. Asinkrit was a bishop in Irkania, Asia. Phlegon was the bishop of Marathon in Thrace. Jermus was a bishop in Dalmatia.
