Tomorrow, April 8, in the Orthodox calendar the day of remembrance of the apostles Rufus, Agabus, Herodion, Asyncritus, Phlegontus and Jermas. They were apostles from the 70s whom Jesus Christ sent to preach the Gospel. Herodion was a native of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, Asia Minor, and was a compatriot of the apostle Paul. He became a bishop in Neopatria and suffered many sufferings for the faith, both from the Jews and from the pagans. After one of these martyrdoms, considering him dead, his enemies left the man, but he, supported by God’s grace, recovered and continued to preach in Rome together with the apostle Peter.
Agabus had the gift of prophecy and preached in Jerusalem and Judea. He foresaw a great famine that occurred during the time of Emperor Claudius, and prophesied that the apostle Paul would be bound in Jerusalem and delivered into the hands of the Gentiles.
Rufus was a bishop in the city of Thebes in Greece. He is mentioned by the apostle Paul in his epistle to the Romans. Asyncritus was a bishop in Ircania, Asia. Phlegontus was a bishop in the city of Marathon in Thrace. And Yerm was a bishop in Dalmatia.
