April 29: Animal Day

Within the framework of Animal Day, we spoke with the First Corporal Daniel Oliva of the Explosives Brigade Department of the Argentine Federal Police, who together with his dog Ibythey tour the Casa Rosada every day in order to prevent, search, locate, neutralize and deactivate explosive devices.

Iby is a Belgian Malinois or Malinois shepherd dog who has been working at the Government headquarters as a detector of explosive substances for a year. His job consists of inspecting the perimeter, entrances and rooms with the aim of providing a security framework for the President, officials and staff of the Casa Rosada. The coverage includes the inspection of vehicles and/or packages that enter the Government Palace.

During training you are taught not to scratch or bark at the explosive substance as this could trigger the initiation system causing a negative event, i.e. an explosion. Iby is a friendly and sociable dog who, through play and exploration, protects the home of all Argentinians.

The Brigade dependent on the Federal Superintendency of Firefighters of the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) operates in the City of Buenos Aires and throughout the national territory. Regarding the prevention of explosives, the Department provides a daily service with detector dogs and operators, with a focus on preventing any accident or possible attack or threat against the House. In its daily staff, it has a guide and a dog – called binomio -, and an auxiliary operator on a permanent basis at the access to Casa Rosada. It is a joint effort with Casa Militar and with the custody of the PFA.
