Apps for smartphones are booming in the corona crisis

The consequences of the global corona pandemic are stimulating the business with mobile apps. In the first quarter of 2020, smartphone applications in the areas of gaming, business and delivery services for food and beverages grew, according to a study by the US company Adjust, which specializes in measuring range online.

Games were particularly popular, and the number of gaming apps downloaded rose to an all-time high of over 45 billion. “If you can’t leave the house, you will increasingly use your smartphone for entertainment,” said Adjust. In the last week of March alone, the number of installations of game applications rose by 132 percent compared to the previous year.

The users not only install the apps, they also play with them. In total, Adjust registered 47 percent more sessions in the first quarter than in the same period last year.

The forced move to the home office, which many employees had to make because of the corona pandemic, is also reflected in the app statistics. The use of business apps doubled (plus 105 percent). The number of installations increased by 70 percent. This is also reflected in the sales of the app manufacturers. The number of payment transactions (“revenue events”) rose by 75 percent. “Many users choose premium versions in order to be able to work with the apps in the home office without restrictions.”

Since many restaurants are currently only allowed to offer takeaway food, delivery service apps also saw a significant increase in usage. Apps that are already on the smartphone are used more intensively here. The number of sessions increased by 73 percent, while the installations only increased by 21 percent.

The study found that shopping apps are most commonly used between noon and 2 p.m. and in the evening. Almost a quarter of the daily sessions take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The situation is similar for apps for delivery services (food & drink), which are used most frequently between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and record around 31 percent of their sessions during this period.
