‘Apps are allocated a maximum of 5GB of RAM on iPad with M1-soc’ – Tablets and phones – News

iPadOS 14.6 allocates a maximum of 5GB of RAM to apps, even though the device has an M1 soc with 8 or 16GB of RAM. That is what the developer of Artstudio Pro concludes after conducting tests on the new iPad Pros.

Developer LuckyClan responded on a forumthread of the graphics app ProCreate in which users requested more information about future capabilities of that app for iPadOS. In the message, the developer of the Artiststudio Pro app stated that iPad apps on iPadOS 14.6 are not allocated more than 5.1GB of RAM by the operating system, even though the device has an M1 soc with 8GB or 16GB of RAM. “If we assigned more RAM to the app, it crashed,” the developer said. “That’s only 0.5GB more than in older models that have 6GB of RAM.”

Following on from this discovery, the development team behind ProCreate says on Twitter that all iPads with an M1 soc can allocate the same amount of RAM for the time being.

Apple will hold an online edition of its World Wide Developers Conference on June 7. According to various rumors, the company will release iPadOS 15, iOS 15 and macOS 12 there.
