Approval of New Therapy for Metastatic Breast Cancer in Mexico

On March 22, the Mexican regulatory agency known as the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) approved AstraZeneca’s drug-conjugated antibody therapy to treat breast cancer in certain stages.

The new treatment is focused on multi-treated people with HER2-positive and HER2-low advanced and/or metastatic breast cancer, who have received previous treatment, which begins a new era in the approach to this condition in Mexico. .

“This therapy has arrived to mark a before and after in the way of treating breast cancer. In the trials carried out, it showed unprecedented efficacy by reducing the risk of death and progression of the disease. We are sure that it will provide new opportunities and greater life expectancy to those who present it”, indicated Dr. Alberto Hegewisch, medical director of AstraZeneca Mexico.

Reduces the risk of death from breast cancer by 36%

The therapy was recognized and applauded last year at the Congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO for its acronym in English), currently considered the world’s largest Oncology meeting.

The results of the phase III DESTINY-Breast03 trial, which showed a 36% reduction in the risk of death and a 64% reduction in the risk of disease progression, increasing four times the possibility of living without breast cancer, the disease.
