JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) gave an explanation of the total lunar eclipse that will occur today.

The explanation was conveyed by BMKG Coordinator for Potential Geophysics and Timestamps, Hendra Suwarta, to KompasTV journalist Glenys Octania, Wednesday (26/5/2021).

According to Hendra, a lunar eclipse occurs because the sun, earth and moon are aligned.

This parallel position causes the sun’s rays to be blocked by the earth, causing a lunar eclipse.

“Why does a lunar eclipse occur? Because the position of the sun, earth, and moon is in a straight line. The sunlight that reaches the moon is covered by the earth,” said Hendra.

Hendra said, the lunar eclipse that occurred on this day was also special because it was reddish in color. He added that currently the moon and earth are at the closest distance.

“Now the eclipse that will occur this afternoon is very special as well that it is called a super blood moon. Later, when the total eclipse is complete, the moon will look bigger and reddish in color. Why is it bigger? Because the distance between the earth and the moon is the closest distance,” he continued, “he continued. .
