Abstract: | According to data from the Observatory of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, during 2018 2,167 new cases of breast cancer were detected in Galicia, which show an incidence of 155 cases per 100,000 women, and which are distributed by provinces as follows: 898 in A Coruña, 721 in Pontevedra, 279 in Lugo and 269 in Ourense (AECC 2018). In response to a written question to the government from Congress, the executive has detailed that, between 2013 and 2018, 8,705,818 euros have been allocated to carry out 708 research projects on cancer. However, between epidemiology and economic data, the experiences of those who suffer from the disease and its social determinants are diluted at the margins. In this way, the need to make visible the concrete life stories that are generated around breast cancer emerges, as a necessary positioning within a feminist epistemological framework. The texts that are narrated below consist of various fragments of real life stories related to breast cancer in different parts of Galicia. All the information provided rigorously preserves the confidentiality and privacy of these women, and for this reason fictitious names have been used (among other things). |
