The chairmen of the Hague city council have appointed Arie Slob as a scout. The former minister has to look at the possibilities for a new majority coalition in the short term.
Last week, the coalition in The Hague fell apart after the VVD stopped working with D66, CDA, PvdA and GroenLinks. This happened after a troubled, inserted meeting of the city council about how the coalition should deal with Hart voor Den Haag, the party of former alderman Richard de Mos.
De Mos was fully acquitted of corruption in April and now wants to return to the college.
The Hague council expects Slob to have “a transparent process, with public reporting to the city council”. Previously, former minister Bruno Bruins was appointed as ‘discussion leader’ to try to improve mutual relations in the city council. He advised the coalition to negotiate with De Mos. VVD, CDA and D66 were willing to do so, but PvdA and GroenLinks were totally against it.
After the restless debate that followed Bruins’ advice, the VVD ended the collaboration and VVD aldermen Anne Mulder and Kavita Parbhudayal submitted their resignations. As a result, the coalition lost its majority.
Slob has been in the House of Representatives for years on behalf of the ChristenUnie. From 2017 to 2022, he was Minister for Primary and Secondary Education and Media in the Rutte III cabinet.
Hart voor Den Haag wishes Slob much “success and wisdom” on Twitter in exploring a new coalition.
