Suara.com – Diet rich in vegetables, fruits, olive oil, and fish (diet Mediterranean) can protect the brain. This is because the diet protects the brain from plaque buildup and shrinkage.
Launch from MedicinenetResearchers in Germany looked at the relationship between diet and amyloid protein and tau, a protein found in people’s brains dementia and Alzheimer. The research was published online May 5 in the journal Neurology.
“These results contribute to the evidence linking eating habits to brain health and cognitive performance in old age,” said lead researcher Tommaso Ballarini, a postdoctoral researcher from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Bonn.
Adopting a Mediterranean diet can protect the brain from neurodegeneration which reduces the risk of developing dementia.

For the study, Ballarini and colleagues collected data on more than 500 people, more than 300 of whom have a high risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The participants reported their diet and took tests of language, memory and executive function.
They also underwent brain scans, and more than 200 spinal fluid samples were taken to look for amyloid and tau biomarkers.
The results showed that people who did not follow a Mediterranean diet had higher levels of markers of amyloid and tau. In addition, people who did not follow a Mediterranean diet scored lower on the memory test.
“Overall, closer adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with preserved brain volume in areas prone to Alzheimer’s disease, less amyloid and abnormal tau and better performance on memory tests,” said Ballarini.
Diet, however, is not the only lifestyle factor that can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

“I think the data is growing and showing that lifestyle interventions are likely to be beneficial for reducing cognitive decline,” said Snyder.
Other lifestyle components, such as exercise, are also important.
