On 16 June 2021, the non-governmental organization UBI4ALL will draw its first unconditional basic income (BPI) for one of the approximately 10,000 EU citizens registered for the draw.
The unconditional basic income is financed through co-financing – a monthly amount of € 800 will be paid to the winner of the lottery without any conditions.
Registration for the BPI lottery will be open until June 14 at 20:00 Central European Summer Time (CEST) for any EU citizen aged 16 and over. The website is available in 20 European languages.
The experiment is not a scientific program, but it is expected that the winners’ reports will provide clear indications.
The introduction of BPI in the EU can be seen as a response to precarious wage conditions, the transformation of the labor market due to automation, and as a means to stabilize the demand side of the consumer market.
Helwig Fenner from Germany, the initiator of the lottery, says: “We will add real-life experience to the endless theoretical debate on basic income and thus make it tangible. In fact, hundreds of donors donated money to someone who was not forced to do anything. So BPI provides humanity with their humanity. ”
His colleague Ana Catarina Neves from Portugal adds: “The pandemic crisis has shown that millions of people could suddenly face poverty. Now is the time to support the idea of a guaranteed income for everyone. “
UBI4ALL has seven team members from different EU countries. It was proposed during the European Citizens’ Initiative “Start an Unconditional Basic Income Across the EU”, which aims to obtain one million signatures by March 2022 to submit its claims to the European Commission.
