Ex-Brazil star Robinho must remain in custody. Brazil’s Supreme Court rejected his request for release.
Former Brazilian soccer star Robinho continues to serve his nine-year prison sentence for rape. Brazil’s Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request by the 40-year-old to be released pending the outcome of all appeals. Robinho has been imprisoned in a detention center in Tremembé, near his hometown of Santos, since March.
It was the second attempt by his lawyers to release the 100-time international player. The former striker from clubs such as Real Madrid (2005 to 2008), Manchester City (2008 to 2010) and AC Milan (2010 to 2015) was convicted in Italy in 2022 for a gang rape in 2013. The crime took place in a nightclub in Milan while Robinho was playing for AC Milan.
After returning to Brazil in 2014, Robinho evaded prosecution in Italy because Brazil does not extradite its citizens. Nevertheless, the Brazilian judiciary recognized the verdict from Italy earlier this year and enforced the sentence domestically.
