Vision Pro production stalls, Apple has to settle for lower targets
The problem is said to be caused by Sony’s ultra-thin displays
Apple currently expects to deliver 400,000 units in the first year
At this year’s WWDC developer conference, Apple unveiled a long-awaited headset for consuming content in augmented and virtual reality. The Vision Pro glasses are crammed to the brim with technology, which also depends on the high price of $3,499 (about 93,000 crowns including VAT). Apple will start selling its glasses only at the beginning of next year, in a limited number of countries. And even then, it will probably have trouble meeting demand.
The Vision Pro is plagued by manufacturing issues
The Vision Pro kit is built from a large number of different components packed into an aluminum and glass body. Apple thus has to rely on a large number of partners during production, and any outage can greatly complicate production. Initially, it was said that Apple wanted to produce 1 million headsets by 2024, but this goal seems unrealistic.
Apple Vision Pro headset environment
According to the Financial Times, which refers to reliable sources in supply chains, Apple is expected to ship a maximum of 400,000 Vision Pro headsets by the end of next year, but it is likely to be an even lower figure. There have reportedly been problems with the production of ultra-fine microOLED screens, which Sony is responsible for in cooperation with the Taiwanese chip giant TSMC.
The fact that production will be lower than Apple expected is also evidenced by reduced orders for components from Chinese manufacturers. Two unnamed companies were reportedly asked to prepare enough parts for 130-140 thousand Vision Pro units in the first year, which is far beyond the initial assumptions. According to a Financial Times report, Apple planned to launch a cheaper version of the headset with a display from Korean companies in 2025, but this project was reportedly postponed due to problems with the Vision Pro.
If the above information turns out to be true, it is possible that the Vision Pro glasses will be available only in the US next year, and their expansion to other corners of the world will not happen until 2025. Of course, this only applies if the Vision Pro is also interest from consumers despite their high price.
