Apple’s Upcoming M3 Ultra Chips: Major Increase in CPU Cores and Graphics Units

Apple is preparing a major increase in the number of CPU cores in the top line of M3 Ultra chips
A small increase is also expected for graphics units
We will have to wait until next year for the top row

Mark Gurman from the Bloomberg agency once again provides us with news from behind the scenes of the Apple brand. In addition to information about the upcoming Apple Watch X, he has now also focused on the new M3 series of processors. Although the first computers with M3 chips are due to arrive in October this year, Gurman is currently working on the top-of-the-line M3 Ultra series, which we should see next year. Compared to the current generation of the M2 Ultra, the M3 Ultra should bring major improvements in the area of CPU cores, and we will also notice a slight increase in the GPU units:

Basic M3 Ultra: 32 CPU cores (24 powerful and 8 economical), 64 GPU cores
Basic M2 Ultra: 24 CPU cores (16 powerful and 8 economical), 60 GPU cores
Highest M3 Ultra: 32 CPU cores (24 powerful and 8 economical), 80 GPU cores
Highest M2 Ultra: 24 CPU cores (16 powerful and 8 economical), 76 GPU cores MacBook Pro in 14″ and 16″ versions with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will also arrive next year

As you can see, this really is a major improvement especially in the CPU area. For the GPU, these are just cosmetic changes. At the same time, it is clear that only the number of performance cores has been increased and the number of energy-saving cores remains the same. Economical cores from Apple Silicon manage the solution of the vast majority of macOS applications and tasks, and only when high performance is needed do performance cores come on the scene. This saves a considerable amount of energy.

Some news will arrive this year

Although we won’t see the M3 Ultra until next year, the basic M3 chips will arrive this year. We can look forward to the 13″ MacBook Air, 13″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar or the new 24″ iMac. Next year, 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros with more powerful M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will arrive. It will be followed by Mac Pro and Mac Studio with the most powerful M3 Ultra series. According to Gurman, however, we are also expecting changes in operational memories. Apple is said to be now testing 36GB and 48GB operating memory for MacBook Pro models. 16, 32, 64 and 96 GB variants are currently on offer.

I enjoy Apple, quality audio-video technology and generally smart solutions that work. I try to spend my free days cycling in bike parks and trail centers, or in the mountains with a backpack on my back. I enjoy good music, sometimes an interesting book and I like to travel.
