“Apple’s Redesigned WatchOS Features Widgets as Central Part of User Interface”

RBG.ID – Apple is reportedly working on the most significant software overhaul for watchOS yet. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the company is redesigning the user interface (UI) of the Apple Watch to make widgets a “central part” of how users interact with the Apple Watch device.

In describing the new UI, Gurman said it brings back elements of the Glances system that were part of early versions of watchOS while borrowing the widget “style” that Apple introduced with iOS 14 last year.

He added that the new interface would be “reminiscent” of the Siri watch face that the company introduced with watchOS 4 in 2017 but would serve as a layer for whatever watch face the user would like to work with.

“It’s also similar to a stack of widgets,” said Gurman, referring to an iOS feature that allows users to browse widgets that have been placed on top of one another.

Reporting from Engadget (1/5), with the redesign of the interface, pressing the digital crown can launch the operating system’s new widget view instead of taking the user to the home screen like the current dial with watchOS 9.

With the possibility that the redesign will appeal to some, Gurman speculates Apple plans to make the new UI optional. Additionally, he implies the change is an acknowledgment that app experiences like the iPhone “don’t always make sense on a smartwatch — a place where you want the most information possible with the least amount to look at.”

With WWDC 2023 just over a month away, it won’t be long before Apple will provide more information about what Watch users can expect from a significant software update.
